Thief’s Magic

Thief’s Magic

Автор: Canavan Trudi

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces. Elsewhere, in an land ruled by the priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it — should she dare to risk the Angels’ wrath. But not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands. Not even the people they trust.

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Автор:

Hiroshi Sugimoto has explored ideas of time, empiricism and metaphysics through a surreal and formalistic approach since the 1970s. A self-described «habitual self-interlocutor,» Sugimoto uses the camera as a bridge between abstract questions and the quiet, comical nature of modern everyday life. Whether formally photographing Madame Tussauds wax figures and the wildlife scenes at the American Museum of Natural History, or opening the lens of his eight-by-ten camera to capture a two-hour-long film in one exposure, he explores themes of consumerism, narrative and existence in rich and evocative imagery. This new project presents a survey of Sugimoto’s iconic work, from his calm seascapes to his more recent exploration of lightning fields and photogenic drawing. Created in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition at Fundacion Mapfre in Spain, the survey includes an introduction and essay by writer and curator Philip Larratt-Smith, an interview with Sugimoto and text by the prominent Brazilian artist Iran do Espirito Santo.
Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948) is a Japanese photographer and architect. He divides his time between Tokyo and New York City. Sugimoto has exhibited extensively in major museums and galleries throughout the world, and his work is held in numerous public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; National Gallery, London; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Smithsonian, Washington, DC; and Tate, London, among others.

Nobody’s Horse

Nobody’s Horse

Автор: Smiley Jane

Abby Lovitt has always been more at ease with horses than with people. Her father insists they call all the mares ‘Jewel’ and all the geldings ‘George’ and warns Abby not to get attached: the horses are there to be sold. But with all the stress at school (the Big Four have turned against Abby and her friends) and home (her brother Danny is gone — for good, it seems — and now Daddy won’t speak his name), Abby seeks refuge with the Georges and the Jewels. But there’s one gelding on her family’s farm that gives her no end of trouble: the horse who won’t meet her gaze, the horse who bucks her right off every chance he gets, the horse her father makes her ride and train, every day. She calls him the Ornery George.

The reliable and humble Gabriel Oak, the vain and impetuous Troy and the reserved yet determined Boldwood. This carefully curated new book in the ongoing Juxtapoz series collects handicrafts that transcend the cliches of the contemporary movement. These objects are indeed works of art, created with lashings of passion, whimsy and humor. The subject matter varies from foodstuff to robots and materials run the gamut from cardboard and paper to cloth, porcelain, metal, wool and yarn. All have been molded, etched, knitted or stitched into surprising shapes and forms from a knitted TV Dinner to a miniature streetscape. These are works that have crossed the boundary between craft, design and contemporary art, many worthy of exhibition in galleries and museums. From the vivid colors and definitive lines of Nicole Gastonguay’s knitted sardine can to the candid realism of Sara Escamilla’s cast footwear and clothing, each is in a class of its own. Other artists featured include Megan Whitworth, Stephanie Munroe, Christl Hansman, Diem Chau and Ana Serrano.

Machenka

Machenka

Автор: Nabokov Vladimir
